15 Tips for Smart Grocery Shopping

  1. Make a list of things to buy. Before you make the list, make sure you've eaten—this prevents adding things on your list that you don't need. In preparing the list, consider your planned out weekly menu.
  2. Have a budget and try to stick with it.
  3. Don't go when you're hungry. Bring a list and a calculator with you. Don't forget the coupons for the things you're planning to buy. Do NOT deviate from your list.
  4. Avoid grocery shopping after work, during payday or major holidays.
  5. Avoid aisles if there is nothing on it that's on your list.
  6. Try store brands.
  7. Don't bring your children. With their tantrums, you'll end up buying things not on your list.
  8. Buy staples in bulk, especially the non-perishable ones. Grab only those items that you need. If you're lucky, you could even find great deals.
  9. Buy frozen veggies.
  10. Check expiration dates. Often, the ones with early expiration dates are those on top or in front.  Also, check the expiration dates of the items you bought in bulk.
  11. For those sold per piece, get the biggest one.
  12. Check for sale of those items on your list. Take a closer look to determine if they really are special deals.
  13. If you're inside the grocery for a quick stop, don't grab the basket. This is to avoid impulse purchases.
  14. Be watchful at the register.
  15. Go grocery shopping once a week.
